Today's word: {Perspective}

Perspective, defined by the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, thus:

a mental view or prospect <gain a broader perspective on the situation>

Right, keep that bold part in mind.

I'm on a mission to find the boy a nursery/kindergarten/place to leave him with adult supervision and preferably some toys and entertainment for 3 mornings a week. In the search for schools there are a conundrum of lists and rules and options. My main concern is distance from home (ie, how long exactly will I be stuck in rush hour traffic) and of course, the cost. A dear friend tells me about the school her little boy attends, it all sounds really good and the money is in budget! I make an appointment to join the tour of the school, thinking this is great, I get to see the school and maybe meet some of the pre-K teachers, ask questions, this is fantastic!

We arrived 5 minutes late and the tour were already half-way done, which left us having to walk through the rest of the Elementary and Middle School, before the tour-guide-person took us back to the start, to view the pre-K classes. Not a biggie I think, I'll have a look-see and then if I have questions, I can ask it a bit later. Before the tour-guide-person even had a chance to let us know, that we are now in fact in the area where we want to be, ie. the pre-K and KG classes, so please feel free to have a look around and if you see any teachers ducking and diving, you go ahead and corner them and ask them all your questions, the mommy to my left started her interrogation. Now, I don't mind if people ask questions, seriously, love it that I don't have to and often, they ask better questions than I could even think of, so really, be my guest, go right ahead and ask away.

HAH! After question two, which dealt with the curriculum the school follows and if it's American or British, I sort of gave her a sideways look, thinking, surely, you're not really going down that route? Your child is four years old, four! She did go down that route, without flinching and clearly no fear. The tour-guide-person answered her as politely as possible that well, it's in fact an international school, blah-blah-blah. Here's the clincher though, mommy-of-future-UN-chief-that's-still-only-4-FOUR, then asks: "So when my child finishes high school, at which universities will he be accepted?" I so very, very nearly burst out laughing, if it wasn't for the mucus-plug in my nose, well, it would have been ugly. Please just take a moment with me here to admire her vision though. I mean, I care for my boy, dearly, but honestly, with life as it is here, I've not even remotely thought of where he'll be matriculating in oh yes, 14 years' time. This is the vision she's working with here, 14 years! I admire that on a level and yet another part of me finds it so ludicrous, so out there, so utterly naïve to think that you, as an expat will still be here in 14 years? Her husband must have some major job security going for him... So, instead of butting in and giving her some wise-ass answer, I asked the boy if he needed to pee-pee, which he did, and so we went to find some solace in the washrooms.

Perspective. There, that's your word for today.

Maz..oh no she didn't!!! *ROTFL* That just gave me the best giggle all day!!!! I was actually sitting here stressing about 1st grade for Nick (6 year old class)...and she is worried about college! Perspective is a great word for today!!

Marianne, I am so glad that you gave me the link to your blog. You are so funny. I laughed all the way through your telling of the "Perspective" story. It's great that you can see the funny side to things. The 14 year plan mother in your tale reminds me of some of the stories I have heard about parents in New York City, Manhatten. It is much more laid back out here in the country in Upstate New York.
